While in South Africa, Dr Parr also ran a workshop in conjunction with South African National Parks and the Rufford Small Grants Foundation on 'Fire Management and Biodiversity In Kruger National Park'.

Dr Jimin Zhao gave a talk to the conference 'Working with China on Sustainable Growth: The Climate Change, Environment, Energy Nexus' organised by Wilton Park, from 8th - 11th October. She also gave a keynote speech at the 'Climate Change, Power, and Poverty' conference held in Uppsala, Sweden on 14th October. Both talks analysed the challenges to the negotiations over the climate change agreement from Bali to Copenhagen, and discussed whether China can 'save' the Copenhagen Agreement.

Dr David Bonilla and Nihan Akyelken (TSU) gave a presentation at the 3rd Forum: Freight Transport Scenarios Conference in Brussels, 21st - 22nd October, which involved key players inside the EU zone engaged in freight transport. The audience included stakeholders from EU transport ministries and freight companies ranging from the truck sector, port authorities and shippers to the rail sector. These activities were part of the EU project Freightvision.

Prof. Gordon L. Clark participated in a number of seminars and conferences during October. He was one of a panel invited to consider the design of investment options for participants in the new Personal Accounts Delivery Agency (HM Department of Work and Pensions), he also participated in a seminar on the global financial crisis sponsored by the Oikos Foundation and organised by D.Phil. candidate Ville-Pekka Sorsa at St Peters College, discussing the notion of 'primitive capitalism'. In addition, he gave an invited lecture to an HSBC industry seminar in London for leading sovereign wealth funds on the results of the survey of global assets managers about the likely investment strategies of SWFs in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. This survey was designed and implemented as part of the Leverhulme sponsored research programme on the governance and legitimacy of SWFs (with Dr Ashby Monk) and can be found on the website.

The Oxford Centre for Water Research is part of a trans-European consortium that has just won a major EU project called 'BioFresh'. This aims to provide a single point of access to information on freshwater organisms. Dr Paul Jepson is leading the work package, on 'Capacity building, awareness raising and outreach'. Several aspects of the project chime with broader research interests in the department relating to geographies of evidence and measurement and the science-policy-media interface. It could provide an exciting source of potential MSc research dissertations.

On 15th October, Nicholas Howarth (3rd year D.Phil. candidate) launched the preliminary findings and a short film documentary of the Oxford University Labyrinth Lost Expedition, which he led in July 2009. The aim of the expedition was to increase geographical understanding of the mythical Cretan 'labyrinth of Minos'. The launch was covered by the Independent and Daily Mail newspapers and the BBC, as well as attracting wide coverage in Greece and elsewhere around the world. To mark the retirement of Dr Jack Langton in the summer of this year, a book of essays has been published in his honour. The volume, English Geographies 1600 - 1950: Historical Essays on English Customs, Cultures, and Communities in Honour of Jack Langton, (edited by E. Baigent and R.J. Mayhew) contains a personal and intellectual biography of Dr Langton which sets out how he views the nature, methods, and practice of geography - as a discipline, an approach, and a way of looking at the world. This is complemented by essays on a range of historical geographical subjects, by some of his pupils who are now academic geographers, and one colleague; the essays reflect Jack's research interests. Dr Jimin Zhao was interviewed on 22nd September by the BBC World Service to discuss the Chinese President's speech at the United Nations Climate Change Summit in New York. Dr Zhao emphasised that it is very significant for a Chinese leader to announce to the world its commitment to address climate change. She said that it sent a strong and clear signal that China will make serious efforts to contribute to an international agreement on climate change after 2012. Dr Zhao also listed the challenges faced by China in addressing climate change, and the importance of international cooperation and technology transfer.

The VIBAT London project has been published by Dr Robin Hickman and Prof. David Banister, setting out how London can achieve deep CO₂ reduction targets in transport. A range of future year scenarios have been tested, with policy pathways developed towards a 60 per cent reduction in transport CO₂ emissions by 2025, rising to 80 per cent by 2050.

The VIBAT London project (Visioning and Backcasting for Transport in London) is supported by the University College London's two-year knowledge exchange programme, UrbanBuzz. The project is led by Halcrow in association with Oxford University Transport Studies Unit, Space Syntax, Transport for London and the Greater London Authority. Dr Robin Hickman presented two papers at the European Transport Conference, in the Netherlands, on 6th and 7th October. The topics were 'Planning for Sustainable Travel', and 'Low Carbon Transport Trajectories in Delhi and London'. Additionally, Dr Hickman has been involved in a CfIT (Commission for Integrated Transport) 'Settlement Patterns and the Demand for Travel' study. The resulting 'Planning for Sustainable Travel' guidance was launched on 23rd October at the Royal Town Planning Institute's Development and Transport Conference. Dr Hickman and Corinne Swain (CfIT Working Group Chair) made a keynote presentation at the conference. Dr Oleg Golubchikov and D.Phil. candidate Anna Badyina attended a conference of the International Sociological Association Research Committee 21: Sociology of Urban and Regional Development (ISA-RC21) on the subject 'Inequality, Inclusion and the Sense of Belonging', held in São Paulo, Brazil, from 23rd to 25th August. They presented a paper on 'The contradiction of dealing with the housing question in Russia'. Dr Golubchikov also attended The 3rd International Workshop on Post-communist Urban Geographies: Actors Shaping Urban Change, held in Tartu, Estonia from 17th to 19th September. He presented a paper on 'Post-socialist post-suburbia? Growth machine and the emergence of "edge city" in the metropolitan context of Moscow' (co-authored with Prof. Nicholas Phelps from University College London). Dr Golubchikov was also discussant at the plenary session on the present and future of urban spatial segregation research.

On the 22nd of September the TSU (Lara Scott together with Eda Beyazit, D.Phil. candidate) acknowledged World Car Free Day, by closing part of Little Clarendon Street, Oxford to cars for a few hours. They worked together with the Oxford Cycle Workshop, Ted Dewan of Roadwitch, and G+Ds, together with some local shops, volunteers, and the City Council, to create a 'living room'; a place where children and adults could read, play, and listen to a lunchtime bike bells' orchestra, while sharing the street with cyclists and pedestrians. It was covered in the Oxford Mail, where Dr Moshe Givoni and James MacMillen's work on Visions 2030 (the future of walking and cycling) also received mention.

At the start of September, Nicholas Howarth (D.Phil. candidate) gave a presentation to over 200 carbon market experts across 30 countries as part of Earthscan's 'Earthcast Webinar Series', kicking off this programme of web-based interactive expert panel lectures on environmental themes. Nicholas reminded listeners that emissions trading schemes must only be considered a part of a comprehensive strategy to contain carbon emissions, including increased carbon taxation, greater public support for research and development, boosting education and training in schools, technical colleges and universities, active industry policy through subsidies, reducing regulatory hurdles, and increasing community acceptance of low carbon technologies and lifestyles. However, he noted, with on-going developments in the carbon markets in the EU, United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, carbon markets are likely to (at least) treble in size by 2012.

On 29th September, Dr Moshe Givoni represented the TSU in chairing a session alongside James Styring from CYCLOX entitled 'Bike to the Future', a talk about how Oxford cycles and where it should go next. This was part of events and an exhibition called 'Pedal Power' organised by the Museum of Oxford (currently on and continuing until 18th October), which celebrates a social history of cycling through the ages in Oxford. In August, Dr Kate Parr attended the International Congress of Ecology in Brisbane, Australia, where she presented two papers, including one at an invited symposium on Adaptive Management. Prof. Paul Whitehead attended the World Forum on Environmental Change hosted by Sir David King at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. The final wrap-up session was led by Al Gore, who gave some chilling statistics on personal carbon use: 'Question is, how are people in the USA going to get from 22 tonnes of carbon per person per year to 2 (UK needs to go from 11 to 2)?!' Prof. Whitehead also chaired the session on Catchment Scale Biogeochemical Modelling at the BIOGEOMON conference in Helsinki this summer, and edited a special issue of Hydrological Research on 'Modelling Impacts of Climate and Environmental Change on Freshwater Ecosystems' (Vol. 40, 2009).

SoGE first department at the University of Oxford to develop and implement a Waste Strategy

Maria Mansfield and Muriel Bonjean with the help of Kate Aydin, the University's Sustainable Development and Waste Management Officer, have developed a Waste Strategy for the School of Geography and the Environment, which was approved by the School's management during the summer. The SoGE is the first department in the University to adopt and implement a Waste Strategy. The Strategy is aimed at reducing waste and encouraging staff and students to recycle more. The first phase of the Strategy implementation started in September, with the introduction of new recycling bins around the building, and an information talk given to staff by Ms Aydin. The ECI, along with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and the Met Office Hadley Centre, hosted an international climate conference '4 Degrees and Beyond: Implications of a global climate change of 4+ degrees for people, ecosystems and the earth-system', from 28th to 30th September. The conference saw over 140 delegates gather from the science community, government, NGOs and the private sector, and received great media coverage including: BBC News online 'Four degrees of warming 'likely'', 28th September), The Guardian ('Met Office warns of catastrophic global warming in our lifetimes', 28th September), and 'Increase in sea levels due to global warming could lead to 'ghost states'', 29th September) and the Act On Copenhagen website (Act on CO₂: '4degree warming could happen within a lifetime says latest climate science' - an interview with Dr Mark New of the SoGE and Tyndall Centre) - links to all these can be found on the ECI's 4 Degrees website. Dr Shonil Bhagwat, along with colleagues from the University of Bergen (Norway) and Missouri Botanical Garden (USA), was invited to participate in a botanical expedition in Tibet between 21st and 27th August. The purpose of the expedition was to identify mountain summits north-east of Lhasa for long-term ecological monitoring. In collaboration with colleagues from Tibet University in Lhasa, the project aims to establish plots at fine spatial scale to study resilience of alpine plant communities to climate change. In addition, on 28th August, Dr Bhagwat gave an invited lecture titled 'Can we reconcile agriculture with ecology?', at the Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Prof. Heather Viles chaired the Biogeomorphology session, where she also presented a poster 'Life Among the Ruins: Biogeomorphology Applied to Heritage Conservation', and in the Planetary Geomorphology session she gave a keynote address 'Weathering on Mars'. Dr Giles Wiggs chaired the Aeolian Processes and Geomorphology session where he presented his co-authored papers 'Aeolian Sediment Mobility on Pans and Ploughed Land on the South African Highveld' and 'Sweeping up Sand: Exploring Turbulent Flow Structures with a New Model of Aeolian Sand Transport'. He also presented a poster entitled 'Under Changing Vegetation Covers in the Southwest Kalahari Desert' in the Biogeomorphology session. Abigail Stone (D.Phil. candidate, completed) presented 'Tufa deposits in the Naukluft Mountains, Namibia' in the Biogeomorphology session, and a poster 'Landscapes in Drylands: Should we be concerned about a sampling-strategy bias on Quaternary aeolian dune records?', in the Landscapes in Drylands session. Professor Mike Edmunds is to receive this year's Meinzer Award, the highest award of the Hydrogeology Division of the Geological Society of America (GSA). The award's namesake, Oscar Edward Meinzer (1876-1948), has been called the 'father of modern groundwater hydrology'. He served as Chief of the Ground Water Division of the US Geological Survey from 1912 to 1946. The Meinzer Award recognizes the author or authors of a publication or body of publications that have significantly advanced the science of hydrogeology or a closely-related field. Prof. Edmunds is the first British awardee and only the second European. The award will be made at the GSA meeting in Portland, Oregon, in October this year, coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the Hydrogeology Division.

(Givoni); 'The "Practise" of "Best Practice"' (Macmillen); 'The Role of National Policies on the Relationship between Freight Transport and Trade' (Akyelkan); 'Dealing with Climate Change - The Need for Organisational Integration' (Anderton); and 'Decarbonising the Road Transport Sector: Breakeven Point and Consequent Potential Consumers' Behavior' (Liu, co-authored with Dr Georgina Santos, also TSU). On 29th May the Transport Studies Unit (TSU), in conjunction with the James Martin Institute of Carbon and Energy Reduction in Transport (ICERT), held a workshop entitled, 'Long Term Scenarios in Transport and Energy: In Search of New Methodologies', which was organised by Dr David Bonilla. The aim of this workshop was to explore ways to strengthen predictions of energy use in transport as well as to strengthen the practice of scenario building. The TSU decided to hold the workshop following the publication of the World Energy Council report 'Transport Technologies and Policy Scenarios' (2007, led by Dr Simon Godwin) and related activity by TSU researchers in the field.

On May 27th, the SoGE and the Said Business School (SBS), in conjunction with the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society (InSIS) hosted the first ever student-organised Water Enterprise Forum. The cross-disciplinary forum on water management was the first of its kind at Oxford, and provided a unique opportunity for students, academics and practitioners to engage in a constructive dialogue on the role of business in the water industry. Participants also learned about future career directions in the water sector. Beginning with a keynote speech by Dr Ian Goldin, Director of the James Martin 21st Century School, the event comprised two sessions, the second being opened by Professor Steve Rayner, Director of InSIS. The forum also heard speakers from the SBS, Aquafed, Global Water Intelligence, the World Wildlife Fund, and economic consultants in the water sector. Closing remarks were delivered by the SoGE's Dr Rob Hope, after which followed a short reception. Students from the SoGE involved in the organisation were Melissa Rohde, Alvar Closas, Gemma Boag and Daniel Shemie.

He was among the ten alumni of this conference invited to give advice to students on research careers in conservation. Dr Bhagwat also gave two key note addresses at the 'Biodiversity and Land Use Change Workshop', organised by Nile Basin Research Programme, University of Bergen, Norway. The topics of the key note addresses included 'How can we reconcile agriculture with ecology?' and 'Biodiversity conservation on a crowded planet'.

During May, Prof. Gordon Clark and D.Phil. students Csaba Burger and Dorothee Franzen were the guests of the German Federal Parliament (Reichstag) in Berlin and had the opportunity to interview Herr Walter Riester, the architect of German pension reform and the so-called 'Riester pension system' - a voluntary, tax-preferred, second pillar defined contribution pension system that was introduced in 2001 to compensate for the changes made to the German national pension. They were also the guests of MetallRente, the largest German 'Riester pension' provider sponsored by the metal industry union and employers.

During April, Prof. Gordon L. Clark spoke at a seminar for Scandinavian PhD students in economic geography, in Uppsala, Sweden, organised by Professors Anders Malmberg and Bjorn Asheim. He was also a guest speaker at the Vega Symposium honouring Professor Allen Scott, organised by the Royal Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography at Stockholm University. In the first instance, his presentation focused upon the 'nuts and bolts' of the geography of finance in the context of the global financial crisis. In the second instance, his Vega Lecture was on 'human nature', with reference to the scope and scale of financial decision-making - the paper that was the basis of this presentation is available on the Working Papers in Employment, Work and Finance website.

His presentation was sandwiched between Antonio Tajani, the Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Transport, and two mayors, Alain Juppé (Bordeaux) and Sam Adams (Portland, Oregon.) A recently published book gives biographical details of several women geographers associated with the School of Geography. They include Gertrude Bell, Nora MacMunn, Marjorie Sweeting, Eva Taylor, Mary Marshall, Barbara Kennedy and Christine McCulloch (current Research Associate). The book, entitled 'Complex Locations: Women's Geographical Work in the UK 1850-1970', was written by Avril Maddrell (who studied for her D.Phil. in the School) and was published in April by Wiley-Blackwell as part of the RGS-IBG Book Series.

Bernardo Peredo, D.Phil. candidate, has won a national bid to undertake the Bolivian Country Report on Climate Change and Forest Governance based on his research on forest governance. This is part of a global analysis undertaken by Intercooperation and Rights and Resources and supported by the Swiss Cooperation. The report will address the opportunities and challenges of indigenous and local communities in climate change and potential REDD projects, as well as the relationship of adaptation and mitigation mechanisms with forest governance in Bolivia.

Dr Robin Hickman and Prof. David Banister are the authors of the transport section of the recently released CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) Sustainable Cities web-based good practice guide. The guide gives advice on planning for sustainable cities, including the role of transport - reducing private car use, improving the carbon efficiency of vehicles, and increasing walking, cycling and public transport. Dr Hickman has also been appointed to the CABE Enabling Panel as from the 1st of May.

Environmental Change and Food Security Programme (GECAFS) hosted a workshop for the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the ICSU Earth Systems Science Partnership (ESSP) to develop a joint research agenda on global change. There were 3 main workshop objectives:

To identify those research questions concerning climate change and agriculture that are priority research areas for the CGIAR and GEC communities, that fill key knowledge gaps and that can only be addressed by the two communities working together.
To identify the type of partnerships needed for implementing such research and propose ways of implementing these partnerships 'on the ground' through joint research programmes.
To identify possible sources of funding for such programmes.

It's ten years since the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) began its work at ECI, and to mark the occasion, UKCIP held a conference to bring together its stakeholders from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Around 120 attended the event, held at St Anne's College in Oxford, which took the theme of 'Past, present and future'. The keynote address was given by Ian Pearson MP, Minister for Climate Change and the Environment (download speech).

UKCIP used the event to launch its Adaptation Actions database - a unique facility, offering free online access to examples of climate change adaptation in the UK. Contributions from UKCIP's stakeholders looked at the development of their approach to adaptation, and the UKCIP team gave updates on current work in progress.

Presentations and other outputs will shortly be available from the UKCIP website.

John Boardman has been awarded an Honorary Professorship at the University of Cape Town from 1 October 2006. The award is for five years and will be held in the Department of Geographical and Environmental Science. Work on land degradation in the Karoo (partly in association with UCT) has been ongoing for almost ten years and will continue with field work in January 2007.

Polly Ericksen ran 4 days of workshops in Kathmandu, Nepal, with the GECAFS research partners in the Indo-Gangetic Plain. The participants came from five research sites, spanning from Bangladesh through to Pakistan. The first two days of the workshop focused on characterizing food systems and their vulnerability to water-related stresses, wrapping up research that has been funded by the Challenge Program for Water and Food. The second two days launched a new grant that the APN has awarded to the IGP team, which will concentrate on how to develop appropriate decision support tools for adapting food sytems so they are less vulnerable to global environmental change.
