James Busuttil (1990), Iain Campbell (1975), Brean Hammond (1973), Aaron Kahn (2001), John Keown (1980), Keith Lloyd (1967), Cristiano Ristuccia (1993), Annis May Timpson (1977), and Giacomo Vaciago (1965) are supporting the Past Common Room Presidents' initiative by gifting £500 for Linacre's 50th. Think back to the welcoming, international and interdisciplinary environment we enjoyed at Linacre, and join us by making a single £500 gift or one spread out in annual or monthly instalments. A donation of £20 a month from each of us would soon add up to help a new generation of Linacre students. The funds will support student scholarships and accommodation, early career fellowships, and Linacre's endowment. Graduate students have a much tougher time financially than we did and yet they are equally talented. Our cumulative donations could make a huge difference in taking their careers forward. Please help take our unique graduate college forward for future generations. We are asking you to add a 0 to the age of the College, not your own! Linacre's giving forms may be found Here Thank you!

We are thrilled to announce a £500,000 pledge from this Fund, to endow a full scholarship in biological, chemical and medical sciences, and two Junior Research Fellowships. The College extents its deep gratitude to the EPA Cephalosporin Fund, and we are delighted to add this amount to our Campaign funds. The full amount for the scholarship is made possible thanks to the Matched Funding scheme recently announced by the University, whereby it commits to 40% of funds, when a college or other body agrees to give 60%, for a scholarship.

Linacre's Operations Manager, Simon Barker, has reported that one year on from the installation of solar panels on the roof of the Abraham and Griffiths buildings, the annual yield has exceeded the predicted energy production. This is particularly pleasing as we have not had a great summer. SAP Estimated annual energy yield = 7425.7 kWh Actual energy yield = 7878.0 kWh CO2 savings (actual) = 4784.2 kg/year

The Jaki Leverson Quad, located between the Griffiths, Abraham, and OC Tanner Buildings, was dedicated on Friday, September 28 at the opening of our 50th Anniversary celebrations. The quad is named in memory of Linacre Old Member, Jaki Leverson (1968). Jaki, who died in May 2010 following a long illness, was a much loved Member of College, and her time at Linacre meant a great deal to her. In addition to earning a MLitt in History, she took an active part in all aspects of College life; she was Secretary of the Common Room, and a member of the first VIII at Linacre- mixed crew, which was the first of its kind to row in Eights Week. She regularly attended Gaudies, Boat Club reunions, and Linacre events in Oxford and London following her student days. She left a very generous legacy to the College, and is remembered for her warmth, keen mind, energy and humour.

The College is very happy to announce the acquisition of new student accommodation, Neil Fraser-Bell House, following a lead gift from Old Member Dr Graeme Fraser-Bell (1985), and additional generous gifts from other donors. The house, located on Stanley Road near Linacre's Iffley Road houses, will provide 11 rooms in the main building and 2 in the annexe. After undergoing sympathetic renovation of the fabric of the building, and the installation of modern and efficient heating and electrical services, the building should be ready to receive its first occupants sometime this spring. Warm thanks go to the generous donors who made this possible.

The College is delighted by the news that Dr Catherine Walter, Linacre Fellow, and co-author Michael Swan, are the first recipients of the new British Council Award for ELT Writing. This new award, presented to them on June 14 at the Society of Authors' annual awards ceremony in London, recognises 'the best writing for English Language Teaching'. Their book, an advanced English grammar course published by OUP last year, was praised by judges as 'a "must-have" for advanced and university level students as well as for trainee teachers'; 'the seriousness of grammar is lightened by a delightfully wicked, wry humour'. Dr Walter is an Oxford University Lecturer in Applied Linguistics, and a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellow.

Linacre student Kirsty Monk has won a Royal Society Partnership Grant in collaboration with Mrs Geerthi Ahilan, Science co-ordinator at St Ebbes C.E. (Aided) Primary School, Oxford, for a study called War and Peace: Species interactions on Hogacre Common. Children from all years from foundation stage to year 6 will be involved in this exciting project to assess and interrogate the biodiversity on and ecosystem services provided by Hogacre Common. This 11 acre plot of old private sports field has been leased to the community by Corpus Christi College and contains areas of grassland (managed and unmanaged), scrubland, woodland and waterways. In collaboration with Low Carbon Oxford, St Ebbe's Primary School aims to convert this diverse area into a rich community resource. By partnering with Kirsty Monk, the children will experience all aspects of an ecological investigation, from planning, sampling and data collection to data manipulation, analysis and conclusion drawing. This project will meet the learning requirements of all ages through stratified tasks, incorporating art, mathematics and literacy as well as science, and involving partnership with New Hinksey Primary school and Grandpont Childrens Centre, both of which are part of the same community. This will be an invaluable project to both the schools and the local community who will benefit from a greater understanding of the biodiversity of the common and the enhancement resulting from the restoration and conservation aspects of the project. The Royal Society have provided £2,896 of funding through their Partnership Grant Scheme.

Linacre Fellow Dr Laura Peers awarded the Ames Anthropology Award for The Blackfoot Shirts Project The Council for Museum Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association has jointly awarded the 2011 Michael M. Ames Prize for Innovative Museum Anthropology to Dr. Laura Peers (Curator of the Americas, Pitt Rivers Museum and Reader in Material Anthropology, University of Oxford), Dr. Alison K. Brown (a Linacre alumna and Lecturer, Department of Anthropology, University of Aberdeen), and Ms. Heather Richardson (Head of Conservation, Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford), for their collaborative 'Blackfoot Shirts Project' which brings together historic collections in the United Kingdom with Blackfoot people in Canada and the United States.
Building on relationships developed first by Brown during her doctoral research in the late 1990s and then during a photographic history project with the Kainai First Nation, Peers, Brown and Richardson developed a project to lend five historic hairlock shirts, from the Pitt Rivers Museum collection, to the Glenbow Museum in Calgary and the Galt Museum and Archives in Lethbridge, Alberta, both of which are located in traditional Blackfoot territory.

The five shirts are nearly 200 years old. They were collected in 1841 by Sir George Simpson, the governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, and given to his secretary, Edward Hopkins. They have been in the Pitt Rivers Museum since 1893 but prior to the project only a handful of Blackfoot people had seen them. As most surviving Blackfoot clothing from this period is now in museums in Europe, Blackfoot people are keen to access these materials so they can learn about the skills and techniques used by their ancestors.

The shirts are made from elk and deer hide and are adorned with porcupine quill embroidery, hide fringe, and strands of horse and human hair. The quillwork designs are related to sacred stories of the Blackfoot people and one shirt has also been painted with the war deeds of its owner.
Pitt Rivers Museum press contact: Kate Webber: kate.webber@prm.ox.ac.uk

Linacre College has a beautiful new walled garden named after Professor Rom Harré, founding member of Linacre, Emeritus Fellow, former Vice-Principal, and eminent academic.
This is thanks to the generosity of one main donor, and others who have kindly given or pledged support. We are most grateful to all.

The garden has been created on land adjacent to the main college site and kindly leased by New College.
