Professor Mike Whelan FRS awarded Gjønnes Medal

The 2011 Gjønnes Medal in Electron Crystallography has been awarded to Michael Whelan (Emeritus Fellow of Linacre College). The award of the medal, by the International Union of Crystalography, recognises an outstanding contribution to the field of electron crystallography. The award was made jointly to Mike Whelan and Archie Howie (Emeritus Professor, Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge) for the development of the dynamical theory of diffraction contrast of defects in crystals, and other major pioneering contributions to the development and application of electron microscopy, diffraction and spectroscopy of materials. Professor Whelan is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Materials.

Ames Anthropology Award

Linacre Fellow Dr Laura Peers awarded the Ames Anthropology Award for The Blackfoot Shirts Project The Council for Museum Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association has jointly awarded the 2011 Michael M. Ames Prize for Innovative Museum Anthropology to Dr. Laura Peers (Curator of the Americas, Pitt Rivers Museum and Reader in Material Anthropology, University of Oxford), Dr. Alison K. Brown (a Linacre alumna and Lecturer, Department of Anthropology, University of Aberdeen), and Ms. Heather Richardson (Head of Conservation, Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford), for their collaborative 'Blackfoot Shirts Project' which brings together historic collections in the United Kingdom with Blackfoot people in Canada and the United States.

Building on relationships developed first by Brown during her doctoral research in the late 1990s and then during a photographic history project with the Kainai First Nation, Peers, Brown and Richardson developed a project to lend five historic hairlock shirts, from the Pitt Rivers Museum collection, to the Glenbow Museum in Calgary and the Galt Museum and Archives in Lethbridge, Alberta, both of which are located in traditional Blackfoot territory.

The five shirts are nearly 200 years old. They were collected in 1841 by Sir George Simpson, the governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, and given to his secretary, Edward Hopkins. They have been in the Pitt Rivers Museum since 1893 but prior to the project only a handful of Blackfoot people had seen them. As most surviving Blackfoot clothing from this period is now in museums in Europe, Blackfoot people are keen to access these materials so they can learn about the skills and techniques used by their ancestors.

The shirts are made from elk and deer hide and are adorned with porcupine quill embroidery, hide fringe, and strands of horse and human hair. The quillwork designs are related to sacred stories of the Blackfoot people and one shirt has also been painted with the war deeds of its owner.

Professor Colin Kleanthous is to be the new Iveagh Professorship of Microbiology. COLIN KLEANTHOUS (BSc PhD Leic) Professor of Biochemistry, Department of Biology, University of York has been appointed to the Iveagh Professorship of Microbial Biochemistry in the Department of Biochemistry with effect from 16 April 2012. Professor Kleanthous will be a fellow of Linacre College.

Early Human Remains Found

Earliest remains of modern humans in the whole of Europe found by Linacre Junior Research Fellow Dr Katarina Douka. Dr Douka was part of an international research team re-examining two infant teeth excavated from a prehistoric cave in Italy. The team showed that the teeth belong to anatomically modern people and are 43,000-45,000 years old, making them the earliest remains of modern humans in the whole of Europe. More information...

The Visitor

It is with regret that we inform you that our Visitor, Lord Rodger of Earlsferry, died on Sunday 26th June 2011 following a short illness. As High Steward of the University he was automatically elected as Visitor of Linacre College, but in his short time as Visitor he enjoyed several visits to the College, one of which was when he performed the Inauguration Ceremony of our current Principal. Professor David Cockayne

It is with great sadness that we report that Professor David Cockayne FRS, Emeritus Fellow of Linacre died on the evening of the 22nd December 2010 after a long illness. An obituary to Professor Cockayne, published in the Guardian newspaper on 2nd March 2011 can be found here.

I am sorry to have to say that Dr Tony Crowle, Emeritus Fellow since 1989 died at home during the night of 8-9 August 2010. He had been suffering from heart trouble.

Rom Harré Garden

Linacre College has a beautiful new walled garden named after Professor Rom Harré, founding member of Linacre, Emeritus Fellow, former Vice-Principal, and eminent academic.

This is thanks to the generosity of one main donor, and others who have kindly given or pledged support. We are most grateful to all.

The garden has been created on land adjacent to the main college site and kindly leased by New College.
